Happenings in My Classroom

Each morning the students have an entry task to complete that consists of 10 math equations or questions about math. Some of the items are things we've done in class, whereas some are being seen for the first time. After completing the problems, the students correct them up in front on the board.
Today when a student was called up to the board, I was worried that he wouldn't be able to get the problem correct, but he surprised me. The problem showed an angle and the student had to guess if it was 12 degrees, 90 degrees, and 126 degrees. He said it was 126 degrees. I asked him, "Why?" and he said that a 90 degree angle looks like this, then he used his hands to create a 90 degree angle and that the angle on the paper was bigger, so he knew it was 126 degrees. I then asked him a follow-up question as to if it was an acute, obtuse, or right angle and he said obtuse, which was correct. I praised him over and over again as he went back to his desk and as he sat down, I leaned over and checked his paper and saw that on his paper he had circled 12 degrees.
That kid!
