They did it to him when I first started hula. It was a big event. All the cooking, decorating, practicing to perform (my first performance), keeping the secret.
Well it happened again last night. It was his 29th birthday and it was decided that we would plan to have practice, but everyone would bring food (for a potluck) and their families to surprise him. Who knows if he had any idea of what was up and if he did he just played along.
As we all came in, our food stayed out in the car and we put our skirts on ready to practice. The Tuesday night ladies had just finished up and we all went into get ready to oli into the dancing area of our halua, but instead of singing our normal oli, we busted out with Happy Birthday halua style. We didn't see his face as he realized something was up, but after we were done and we started to file in to the area, he told us to get out with a big huge grin on his face. We all shuffled out to get our food and presents and to let all the other people in that had gathered out in the foyer of the halua.
We ate and laughed and enjoyed watching him open his presents. He got a DS. It was a great night with only a smidgen of sadness.
