It seems to keep happening and so far we haven't found a way to stop it. Not the grieving mind you, but the killing. At Virgina Tech a 23-year old man went on a killing spree killing two in a dorm and two hours later killing 30 more. Why does this keep happening and why do so many of them happen in schools? It makes me wonder what is happening to those kids. Is it something that the school is doing to them or are they already pre-disposed to it? Is it because their parents didn't love them enough? Is it because a teacher got on their case for not turning in their homework? Or is it environment created by the teacher in the classroom? Is it the mocking of other students? Or the inability to fit in? What would lead someone to do this and will it ever stop?
After the first shooting in a middle school in Moses Lake, WA (1996) when 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis opened fire on his algebra class and killed two students and one teacher, there have been 48 more shootings and 153 victims world wide, but mainly in the United States. I cringe to think that in the past 10ish years we have lost so many lives and wonder if we are becoming desensitized to it all. It seems to happen way to often and most often than not the killer fits the same profile. I know for me the ones that have happened closer to home or in cities that I have lived or know people who live have hit me harder, but nevertheless, when I heard about this latest one I was sad for the people whose lives were taken and all the people affected by it, but really I wasn't affected. I wanted answers. Why did he do it? What was his childhood like? Did he have many friends? Were there any signs beforehand?
But alas we will never know because he took his own life. We can only gather answers from what others know. And that is just going to have to be okay.
For all of those who are grieving, my heart and prayers go out to you.
