Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Noah Webster was born this week back in 1758....besides the online version, do you own a dictionary?  Do you ever use the hardback copy or is your hunt for a definition strictly online these days?

I have a bunch of dictionaries in my classroom for my students to use, but none at at my house. I typically use the online version.

2.  Should public schools ban Halloween celebrations?  What about other holiday celebrations currently under fire?

Halloween shouldn't be banned. I understand that many people in our country don't celebrate Halloween, but that doesn't mean we should take it away from the people that do.  They want schools to be universal to make everyone feel included, so why can't we teach all holidays that are celebrated in the homes of our children?  Having the Halloween parade (where everyone dressed up and marched throughout the classrooms) was one of my most favorite memories of elementary school.  Some schools have found ways to get around it, like having students dress up like book characters, but I think kids should be able to dress up as they want as long as it's appropriate for school.

3.  What's your favorite 'dog' movie?

Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians tie.

4.  When were you last somewhere you'd describe as 'too quiet'?

Too quiet? Never is life quiet around me...

5.  Are you a neat cook or a messy cook?  In other words do you clean as you go or make a big mess and then deal with it later?

I'm a neat cook.  I was taught to clean as I go, so that when the meal is served, the only dishes left to clean will be the ones that we are eating off of and the ones serving the food.  I have also learned to cook many things in only one pot, which also means less cleaning.

6.  Did you hear about Felix Baumgartner, the skydiver who broke the sound barrier via parachute?  Was your first thought  COOL! or was your first thought CRAZY!  Are you adventurous?

I did read about this escapde and actually my students and I watched the video of his descent. It was pretty amamzing and although I would love to parachute, there is no way that I want to do it from space.  I am totally adventurous.  It is such an amazing high that can be gleaned from it, also I love having the stories to tell.

7.  What's not a word but should be?

hmmm, I will get back to you on that one.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Speaking of Halloween and it being just around the corner, I'm currently in the middle of decorating my hearth for it and can't wait to go and pick out some pumpkins.  Last year I did some glue gun work to decorate them, this year I may even carve one.
