I share a lot about my life (past and present) with my students to help them access their own background knowledge and hopefully help them to remember when they have done something similar. I also have my family members come in when they are in town, so that my students can meet them and make connections to the stories that I've told them in the past.
The other week, after my sister, brother in law, niece, and nephew came to visit one of my students asked when they were going meet my husband.
I just giggled.
At the beginning of the year, I made it very clear to my students that I'm a Ms. Not a M-R-S, but a M-S. I have no ring on the correct finger and until I do and have a new last name I will not be a Mrs. Plus my mom is Mrs. Chock.
So I asked that student if my name had changed? He said no. I asked him if I had a ring on my finger. He said no. I then told him, unless he knew my husband and could bring him in, they wouldn't be meeting him.
The whole class broke out in laughter.
Little do they know...they might already know him.
