The Happenings in My Classroom

Yesterday my kids were being tested on how many words they could read a minute and how well they remembered the story. Many did just fine reading it, but when it came to answering the questions they were so far off.
Background: The story was about a boy who went to a bookmobile because the library was closed. He returned a book and wanted to check out a book. The librarian smiled at him and told him she would help him when she was done. He went to the children's section to find it and there he found a book with a cover that had someone that looked like him (brown skin) and was about the same age. He checked it out from the nice librarian and then left quickly because the bookmobile was crowded.
So in asking the the first question: What is a bookmobile? I got answers like
  • it's in the children's section.
  • it's a car with books
  • it's a car with no roof.
  • it's something you stand on to get books.
#2. Was the librarian nice? And what in the story tells you that?
  • Yes, cause she was polite
  • Yes, cause she didn't say mean words to him
  • Yes, cause she smelled him and said this is a good book for him.
#3. In the story, it says "his eyes fell on a book" what does that mean?
  • He stared at the book
  • He knew it was the right book for him
  • He fell and the book landed on his lap.
  • He fell and the book hit his head.
#4. What does the boy look like?
  • He has brown skin
  • He has pale skin. I asked this child to tell me more about the skin. He then said the boy had peach skin.
  • I don't know, it didn't say in the story.
  • He was nice and kind.
To give all the kids credit, I did have to read it multiple times to get the answers and to understand what was going on in the story and they only get to read it once and then have to answer the questions.
