The Merrie Monarch Festival happens every year in Hilo, Hawaii. Hula halau's are invited to come over and participate in the best of the best hula competition. Both men and woman compete in kahiko (chant) and auana (song) categories.
Although I was unable to be there this year, I watched the live streaming from a tv station in Hawaii. Ke Kai O Kahiki from Wai'anae performed an amazing mele (song) in the kahiko portion of the competition. Tu Oe, the mele they performed, is a mele ma'i or procreation chant symbolizing the lighting of a wick and the ramrod used to load the cannon honoring an ali'i from Maui.
It is amazing! Watch! You won't be disappointed.
