The sad thing is I can only openly say this here on this blog. At work today, I will have to discourage talk about Halloween because I have students in my class who do not celebrate and in honoring their beliefs I have to put my wishes to celebrate and talk openly about something that has been apart of my life aside and honor those kids.
I worry about doing things like that. It seems many of the holidays that we celebrated openly throughout my school days are being pushed aside because one group or another has problems with the reason behind celebrating the holiday (i.e.-celebrating the devil and/or God respectively.) There is no more wearing your Halloween costume to school and having a parade through the classrooms to show them off. There is no more Christmas Vacation, Christmas trees in the classroom, pretty much Christmas at all. It's Happy Holidays. There is no more Easter celebration either. Yet are asked to teach about Hanukkah, Yom Kippur, Kwanzza, and all the other holidays of other groups of people.
Kids are kids and they want to tell me what they are going to be for Halloween and where they are going trick-or-treating. They have been super excited all week, yet when they ask me a questions about Halloween or want to tell me about their costume I to have to tell them that we can't talk about it now or they have to come and talk to me during their recess. It sucks! I wish we could talk about it and celebrate like we did when I was a kid. I want them to be able to wear their costumes, parade around, get tons of candy and then send them home!
So I guess I'll take my opportunity here to say:
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
Go out and Trick-o-Treat and have a Fantastic Time!

edited: I will say that we have found ways to get around this in having a "Cookie Party" where the students bring in candy and cookies and then we make it a math activity where they have to buy their cookie and frosting for 5cents each and then they can buy toppings to equal a quarter. This is one of the cookies that is already full of stuff and is halfway eaten. We also do a lesson in symmetry where the students cut a round shape out of orange paper and black paper. Then they cut half a face out of the black paper and glue it on the orange paper, so it looks like a jack-o-lantern We also studied spiders and bats this week during reading. So I guess we are getting some things in...
Here are some of the treats that I got:
