100 Day

My first grade students and I have been counting the days we have been in school on chart that lookes like this. Each day we add the number and the coin amount to make that number. When they were in kindergarten the 100th day of school was a big deal, but in first grade we do a few things, but then treat it like it is any other day. While many of my students thought that once we filled the chart we would be done with school, one of my girl students knew this to not be true.
See, my mom comes and bakes cake at the end of the month with all the kids who have birthdays in that month. It lets my mom come back into the classroom, gives my students the experience of cooking, and lets them feel special because they made something for the whole class for their birthday.
So the girl has not had a chance to bake cake with my mom yet, so on the 100th day of school, with our chart filled I asked if this was the last day of school and she raised her hand and said no. I asked her to explain how she knew it wasn't the last day of school and she said because there are all these months left (pointing to the birthday chart) that kids didn't get to bake cake with your mom.
