Ash Wednesday

Today, I went to church for the annual kick off to the Lenten Season. I would like to tell you that I lived it up last night and had a raging good time at some Mardi Gras Party, but that wasn't the case as you may already know from reading my past posts. Once inside the small chapel I attended I was surprised to see a packed house. There usually is about 15-20 people at daily mass, but today there was a good 100. It felt great standing amongst those Catholic people that were also ready to prepare themselves. It made me feel like I wasn't the only one. That there were many people that did the same thing. (Yes, yes, I know that there are many people who are Catholic and observe Lent, but I don't always see them.)
So as we listened to the gospel for today, the priest spoke from the verses that summarize to say as to not go out and be boastful of what you are doing, just do it. If you fast, don't look like you are fasting, just do it. If you are giving alms, don't let your right hand know what what you left is doing, just do it. And when you pray, pray in private, don't do it out in the open and make a spectacle of yourself. I love these verses they always tend to remind me of what I should be doing and not doing as I choose. So even though we are not supposed to tell what we are doing for Lent, I am going to share with you in order to keep myself accountable.

  • Take Herbal Life Shakes (in my head is a mental image of my dad doing his shake dance-and it is making me laugh-if you've seen it you know what I am talking about.)

  • Go to the gym 4 times a week.

  • Hula 2 times a week.

  • Pray every night and add a Hail Mary or two.

So there you go...oh and if you need a little help with some reflecting here is a cool site I found. Just click on the pic.
