Hula Camp

I spent the first weekend of my Spring Break at Hula Camp. In the 2 and 1/2 years I have been dancing this is only my second time coming to hula camp. We dance from Friday at 7:30pm until Sunday at 3pm. It is a lot of work and a lot of learning, but also a lot of fun and bonding time. Everyone is sweating profusely, our bodies are sore, and our brains are mush by Sunday, but it is a great time. This weekend we learned 4 new dances that will be incorporated into the show in May for Na Palapalai. They were two awaunas (songs) and two kahikos (chants). Usually we only learn three new dances, but because they were short we got to do another one.
I have been having a hard time with hula recently because I haven't been practicing as much as I should be, so when I show up to hula I am unprepared and I feel like I am holding everyone back and getting yelled at. I have also been feeling very guilty about not going. So it was super nice to be able to go this weekend and have this week to practice all this week. The only problem is that when I am practicing my body is still showing signs of being sore.
In going to Hula Camp, I am feeling the fever again. I have that feeling I used to get after a retreat when all you want to do is hang out with the people that you have been on the retreat with. So it was hard to leave for Spokane, knowing that I would be missing Tuesday and yet again another Thursday night. I do know that they will be there when I come back and I can dance when I come back.
